TBPD

A ver, en las últimas semanas, siento que postear en este blog me resulta más pesado de lo que debería ser. Esto, sumado al hecho de que por algún motivo imposible de comprehender, el número de visitas está bajísimo.

Así que, obviamente, no planeo abandonar este blog. Eso jamás sucederá. Pero lo que quiero anunciar en este post es que dejaré de postear tan frecuentemente acá, porque la mayoría de mis esfuerzos serán concentrados en mi nuevo blog.

Sí, dije nuevo blog.

Este nuevo blog será exclusivamente un blog de filosofía, y en principio, será un esfuerzo compartido entre yo y dos de mis amigos, antiguos compañeros de un viejo blog que tuvimos, llamado La Batería Fina.

El blog todavía no tiene nombre, pero sí dirección, y ya ha pasado de su existencia exclusiva en el mundo noumenal a también mostrarse como fenómeno. La dirección es:

Como verán, está en WordPress, y todavía en construcción. Así también, notarán que todavía no tiene nombre, refiriendo las siglas TBPD a "to be philosophically determined".

Finalmente, quiero profundizar un poco en el sentido del blog. Si bien estará dirigido por estudiantes de filosofía, no queremos que sea un blog excesivamente académico, puesto que alienaríamos a la mayor parte de nuestros posibles lectores. De esta forma, los artículos serán relativamente cortos, y redactados específicamente para el blog, de manera que, incluso si se trata de un tema bastante particular, como por ejemplo, el del origen del mal en Kant, esto sea explicado sin asumir un conocimiento muy amplio por parte del lector.

No se busca, pues, filosofía para principiantes. En lo absoluto. Lo que se busca es una filosofía para blogs, lo queda por ser filosóficamente determinado.

Perú 21 empezó bien con sus entregas semanales de comics de Batman sacando nada menos que Year One, considerado como el mejor comic de Batman de todos los tiempos. Sin embargo, y como era previsible, todo se fue downhill desde ahí, y la verdad es que esperar una semana para unas cuantas páginas de un material mediocre ya no me entusiasma (aunque igual sigo comprando).

Entonces fue ahí que dije: "¿Por qué seguir esperando y no me bajo mejor los mejores comics de Batman desde internet?". Y efectivamente eso es lo que estoy haciendo, habiendo empezado con The Dark Knight Returns, también de Frank Miller.

Acabo de terminar el primer libro, y ya puedo ver que no decepcionará, por lo que lo he subido a mi blog para compartir. Disfruten.

Los límites de cualquier teoría ética

Pondré una selección de citas del libro de Allen W. Wood, Kantian ethics, que corresponden a las dos últimas páginas del mismo.

This book has been about a certain kind of ethical theory – Kantian ethics. It has also been about ethics – about ethical issues, such as those about lying, sexuality, and economic justice. These two points of focus are closely related, but they should not be confused.

It makes sense to have strong convictions about ethical issues – for instance, that it is always (or nearly always) wrong to falsify declarations or lie to oneself, or that the prevailing economic system or sexual mores are in need of radical reforms. But the same is not true of ethical theories.

The function of an ethical theory is to help us examine and criticize our ethical convictions, sometimes to reach new ones, to defend these convictions, and to understand the rational basis of them. But our powers of reason are so fallible that we can never hope to reach certainty or confidence about this basis. Kantian ethics may be (my own conviction is that it certainly is) the best kind of theory human beings have devised as a background for their moral reflections. But the ground of its principal value, which we explored in Chapter 5, is vulnerable to doubt. In Chapter 7 we saw that Kantian ethics depends on the conviction that our will is free, but it admits that we do not understand how this freedom is possible, and that the very idea of it may be in principle incomprehensible to us.

The study of ethical theory is nevertheless valuable to us as reflective moral agents, despite the fact that if pursued honestly and diligently, it will leave us in a state of hopeless perplexity about the foundations of morality from which there is no prospect of escape. Or rather – it is utterly indispensable to us as moral agents precisely because it is bound to condemn us to that state.

There can be nothing more important to us in this brief flicker of life than whether we have acted as we should or have failed to do so (or as Kant would say: “in conformity to duty” or “contrary to duty”). Yet the ultimate basis of our judgments about this matter of supreme importance will always remain obscure and uncertain.

This is the way I propose that Kantian ethics should now think about the contrast that Kant himself drew between “the starry heavens” (the prospect of which humbles us to insignificance) and “the moral law” through which we gain a sense of our sublime dignity (KpV 5:161–3). Kantian ethics no longer needs (if it ever did) the supernaturalism implied in Kant’s contrast, but in the contrast I am proposing in its place is also something that is earnest and uplifting yet at the same time frustrating, humiliating, frightening and comfortless. It is one of the tasks of philosophy to make us aware that neither religion nor science offer us any prospect of certainty or any consolation as we face the absurdity of the human condition.

Our chief business in life is that our thought and conduct should live up to the dignity of rational nature. But our human condition has arisen, and is sustained, by the merest cosmic accident. It can never have any greater meaning than we, with our feeble and errant rational powers, are able to give it by acting as we ought, according to reason.

A ver, si les gusta Belle and Sebastian, probablemente no necesitan motivos para interesarse en el último proyecto de Stuart Murdoch. A menos que sean como yo, alguien al borde de sobredosis del grupo escocés, que únicamente escucha el excelente The Life Pursuit, porque ya no puede aguantar el resto del catálogo del grupo salvo por muy pequeñas dosis.

Así que cuando me enteré del proyecto, no me entusiasmé mucho, y comparto el sentimiento de este otro bloguero a la perfección (incluyendo lo de Buffy) cuando dice que:

When I heard that Stuart Murdoch (of Belle & Sebastian fame) was writing a musical film, I found the idea so sickeningly twee that I just about gave myself a hernia trying to stop wave after wave of vomit. Not to mention that I absolutely, totally, utterly hate, hate, hate musicals (the musical episode of Buffy… being the only exception).

Sin embargo, ya he escuchado el disco repetidas veces, y si bien no me termina de satisfacer por completo, sí lo hacen las siguientes tres canciones que procederé a compartir (ya había puesto el disco entero, pero MediaFire lo borró, así que búsquenlo en otra parte si lo quieren).

Sin ánimo de ponerme muy repetitivo, comparto ahora algunas capturas de mi juego más anticipado del año. Vean.

El juego se ve claramente basado en el Rock Band original, aunque con tres voces en vez de una, y gráficos como para conmover a cualquier fan de los Beatles. Personalmente, no puedo esperar.
